Are Facial Fillers the Right Fit for Fixing Wrinkles?

You’ve heard that facial fillers are great for filling in deep lines and wrinkles, but maybe your only impression of facial fillers are the noticeably filled faces of the Kardashians, and while they're a striking bunch, maybe you’re looking for something a little different.

And that’s the beauty of fillers; it’s an art, and it’s an aesthetic tool that allows for complete customization to achieve the look you want from "barely there" to a more "dramatic" fill.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before looking to facial fillers to fix wrinkles:

What are facial fillers?

There are several available dermal fillers on the market, and some are composed of naturally occurring substances, such as hyaluronic acid, and others are made with synthetic gels, such as calcium hydroxylapatite.

These dermal fillers vary in the skin and facial concerns they address as well as what area of the face they can be used on.

What do facial fillers help with?

Dermal fillers help to replace the facial volume that we naturally lose with age, which can cause facial creases and wrinkles, slight sagging and loss of facial contour, thinning lips as well as shadow of the lower lids.

Additionally, dermal fillers can also correct recessed scars or improve facial symmetry.

What’s the difference between facial fillers and Botox?

Facial fillers help to smooth out wrinkles by plumping up the volume under the skin versus Botox, which causes the paralysis of the smaller facial muscles that cause expression lines or “dynamic wrinkles.”

What fillers do I have to choose from?

At Potomac Medical Aesthetics, we offer a variety of fillers from Juvéderm and Restylane families that work to solve specific skin concerns and vary in their application sites on the face.

For Juvéderm, we have Voluma XC, Volbella, and Vollure, and for Restylane, we offer Silk, Lyft, Refyne, and Defyne.

How long do the effects of facial fillers last?

The lasting effects of fillers range anywhere from six months to two years, depending on which type of filler we use and where it is applied in the face.

What’s the experience of getting filler like?

Most facial filler treatments can be completed in as little as twenty minutes to an hour, depending on your unique goals and the current condition of your skin.

There is no anesthetic needed for this procedure, and, given the nature of fillers, you will be able to see immediate results with each syringe.

Once your filler treatment is complete, you’ll experience little to no downtime and can return to your normal daily schedule, although we may advise you steer clear of strenuous exercise and sun or heat exposure for a short period of time. (Post-treatment recommendations made on a case-by-case basis.)

Would I be a good candidate for facial fillers?

Ideal candidates for dermal fillers are patients with lines and lines who are looking for solutions alternative to surgery that will smooth and rejuvenate the face.

Fillers are also an excellent option for patients who have a smaller problem area that can be specifically targeted and does not constitute the need for facial surgery.

To ultimately determine whether you will be a good candidate to receive facial fillers, we’ll need to conduct a consultation to evaluate your goals, gauge your specific skin concerns, make treatment recommendations, and answer any and every question you have about facial fillers.
